What is Citizen Science

Citizen science is the practice of public participation and collaboration in scientific research to increase scientific knowledge. Through citizen science, people share and contribute to data monitoring and collection programs.

When developing the Magical Mysteries at Bukit Kiara study, we were determined to include participation from both experts as well as the community. With the help of our partners Urban Biodiversity Initiative, we were able to finetune protocols that could easily be followed by anyone, regardless of academic background.

Through word of mouth, we have managed to cultivate a wonderful group of citizen scientists that run the gamut from geologist to student and to retirees. What’s incredibly evident is the pure love for Bukit Kiara and the commitment to protect and preserve this green lung through this study. Meet some of them in the video below:

As of December 2022, we now have:
– 220 Citizen Scientists total
– 189 hours of survey completed
– 63 surveys completed

We are extremely grateful for all the time and effort volunteered and look forward to continuing and growing this project in 2023!
